Deep Plane Facelift
in San Francisco

Many  men and women struggle with facial changes, such as loose skin, deep wrinkles, and hollow features that make them appear older and tired. An expertly performed deep plane facelift combats these signs of aging by adjusting the deeper facial tissues to restore facial volume and provide a youthful, well-rested, natural appearance. Amit Arunkumar, M.D. is a board-certified, Columbia-University-instructed, Park-Avenue-fellowship-trained facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon. He specializes in deep plane facelift in San Francisco and is known for his excellent bedside manner and outstanding results.

“Dr. Arunkumar is such a skilled and talented plastic surgeon! I’m getting so many compliments from people after my procedures. I look like a much younger version of myself. I’m so happy with the results. Truly amazing!! He is a wonderful person and was always available when I had questions. I highly recommend him!”

What Is a Deep Plane Facelift?

Deep plane facelift surgery is an advanced technique that addresses the deeper tissues in order to consistently achieve a natural appearance. The procedure corrects aging-related changes to the face, including:

  • Laxity and wrinkling of the skin.
  • Deepening of the nasolabial folds.
  • Loss of soft tissues, fat, muscle, and bone volume.
  • Sagging cheeks.
  • Jowls

Facelift San Francisco CAAn expertly performed deep plane facelift elevates soft tissues to their natural, youthful position while restoring volume to the mid-face and providing definition and volume to the jawline. The cheeks appear lifted, the appearance of the nasolabial folds is improved, and jowls are corrected. The result is a youthful heart-shaped appearance to the face that can turn back the clock decades.

A deep plane facelift will more effectively rejuvenate the middle third of the face when compared to other facelift techniques. To address the lower third of the face and neck, a deep plane facelift is usually performed in conjunction with a deep neck lift to address skin excess, muscle banding, and sagging in the neck. The deep plane technique is grounded on complete release of critical facial ligaments which allow for durable changes, with many patients enjoying their results for upwards of 10 to 15 years.

Dr. Arunkumar’s Park Avenue fellowship training emphasized facial balancing as a core component of facial rejuvenation and so if indicated, a number of complimentary facial procedures are included in the cost of a deep plane face and neck lift. During your consultation with Dr. Arunkumar, you will have the opportunity to describe your goals in detail and discuss a comprehensive and individualized treatment plan.

Candidates for Deep Plane Facelift

Men and women in their 40s and 50s are typically excellent candidates for deep plane facelifts, but Dr. Arunkumar regularly performs this procedure on patients in their 60s and 70s with transformative results. Patients must be in good overall health. Some medications and supplements may interfere with healing, such as over-the-counter pain medicines (Tylenol is acceptable), fish oil, flaxseed oil, and vitamin E. Dr. Arunkumar may direct patients to discontinue certain medications or vitamins for two weeks before and after deep plane facelift surgery. Deep plane facelift surgery is one of the most common reasons for consultation with Dr. Arunkumar.

Prior to Your Deep Plane Facelift Procedure

Dr. Arunkumar will perform a physical examination and comprehensive assessment, which will include discussing your goals for treatment in depth. For those patients who are candidates for a deep plane facelift, pre-operative and surgical dates will be scheduled. Pre-operative photographs will be taken by Dr. Arunkumar or one of his associates.

On the night prior to your surgery, please do not eat or drink after midnight. Your anesthesia team will determine which medications, if any, to take on the morning of surgery with a small sip of water. A close friend or family member should accompany you to and from surgery and should be able to care for you for the first 24 hours after surgery.

On the morning of surgery, Dr. Arunkumar will review your surgical plan with you, and then will mark small, well-placed incisions hidden around the ears and under the jaw.

Dr. Arunkumar plans incisions strategically to ensure that your hairline maintains a natural appearance and that all incisions are nearly invisible once fully healed. Patients should be able to wear their hair in any style or length without concern. A pre-operative safety check is performed by the entire team and the surgery commences.

Deep Plane Facelift Procedure

Dr. Arunkumar is a subspecialist in deep plane facelifts, and at this point, the entire team operates as a unit, singularly focused on achieving an exceptional result. An expertly executed deep plane facelift includes releasing critical facial ligaments that allow for the natural repositioning and vertical lifting of the facial architecture to a youthful position. The SMAS (superficial musculoaponeurotic system) is never pulled, stretched, or tightened, but rather repositioned to a natural, youthful position. The result is revolumization highlighting the cheekbones and recreating a heart-shaped youthful face. The incisions are closed meticulously. A nerve block is administered to minimize post operative pain. Your friend or family member will be called once the procedure is complete.

Deep Plane Facelift Recovery

You will have ointment, non-stick dressings, and fluffed cotton or gauze covering the periphery (outer edge) of your face, secured with a light wrap. Patients should relax at home, with their heads propped up on several pillows or in a recliner. Pain after a deep plane facelift tends to be very tolerable, with few patients requiring stronger pain medications. Because a deep plane facelift repositions tissues using a naturally occurring plane between facial structures, swelling and bruising tend to be less than when compared to a non-deep-plane-extended facelift technique.

Facelift Results San Francisco CAOur facial plastic surgeon sees patients for a follow-up appointment the day after surgery. Sutures are removed at several follow-up visits during the first 10 days and bruising and swelling start improving during this period. You will be required to stay within 30 minutes of the office for the first 1-2 nights after surgery and traveling patients should expect to stay for follow up appointments for the first 10 days following surgery. Facial tightness is expected for several weeks.

Deep Plane Facelift Results

You will notice dramatic improvements during the recovery process, with longer lasting and more natural results from a deep plane extended facelift than alternative facelift methods. Many patients find that their results last upwards of 10 to 15 years.

An expertly executed deep plane facelift minimizes the need for routine maintenance such as dermal fillers or skin tightening treatments, providing durable and elegant results. An extended deep plane facelift is often performed in conjunction with a variety of complementary facial rejuvenation procedures, such as facial fat transfer, eyelid surgery, brow lift, or laser treatments.

“Dr Arunkumar is the surgeon you want for a natural looking deep plane face and neck lift. Not only was he one of the few formally trained under the world renowned Dr Andrew Jacono in NYC after his Columbia medical training , but he brings with him a deep care of the patient that leaves you feeling heard. His meticulous approach to understanding what results I wanted ( and didn’t want ) and thoughtful, always on care after the surgery left me feeling 100 percent satisfied with my experience and my very natural results. I love it when my friends and family compliment me on looking so great but that can’t quite place why ! Finding a surgeon that has demonstrated experience with deep plane face and neck lifts is a huge plus and Dr. A fits the bill.”
